How the Overtime Calculator Works
This free overtime calculator supports Federal (FLSA) and California overtime rules, plus fully customizable thresholds. Enter your daily hours and pay rate to see an instant breakdown of regular pay, overtime pay (1.5×), and double time pay (2×).
Federal (FLSA) rules: Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn overtime at 1.5× their regular rate for all hours over 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement at the federal level.
California rules: California provides additional protection with daily overtime: 1.5× pay after 8 hours in a day, and 2× (double time) after 12 hours in a day. The 7th consecutive workday also triggers overtime — first 8 hours at 1.5×, hours beyond 8 at 2×. Both daily and weekly thresholds apply, with the higher amount paid.
Custom rules: If your state, country, or contract has different thresholds, use the custom mode to set your own weekly threshold, daily threshold, double-time threshold, and multipliers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is overtime calculated under federal law (FLSA)?
Under the FLSA, non-exempt employees earn 1.5× their regular rate for all hours over 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement. For example, 45 hours at $20/hour: 40 × $20 = $800 regular, plus 5 × $30 = $150 overtime, totaling $950.
How does California overtime differ from federal rules?
California adds daily overtime: 1.5× after 8 hours/day and 2× after 12 hours/day. On the 7th consecutive workday, the first 8 hours are 1.5× and hours beyond 8 are 2×. Both daily and weekly rules apply, with the higher calculation paid.
What is time and a half?
Time and a half is 1.5× your regular hourly rate. If you earn $20/hour, time-and-a-half pays $30/hour. It's the standard overtime premium under federal and most state laws for non-exempt employees exceeding weekly or daily hour thresholds.
What is double time pay?
Double time is 2× your regular hourly rate. It's not required by federal law but is mandated in California for hours over 12/day and hours over 8 on a 7th consecutive workday. Some union contracts also provide double time for holidays.
How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?
Divide annual salary by 2,080 (40 hrs × 52 weeks). Monthly salary by 173.33. Biweekly by 80. For example, $52,000/year = $25/hour. Your 1.5× overtime rate would be $37.50/hour.
